Cat stepping out of a white self-cleaning litter box, for a PETKIT PuraMax 2 review

Our PETKIT PuraMax 2 review comes down to this: it's a good-value automatic litter box for 1 to 2 easygoing cats, but it isn't set-and-forget. Owners love skipping the daily scoop and tracking each cat's visits. The catch is upkeep, so plan to empty the bin every few days and deep clean the drum about once a month.

Below, we break down what owners love, where it lets them down, and the setup tips that seem to separate happy owners from frustrated ones.

PETKIT PuraMax 2: worth it for the right home

Good fit for: 1 to 2 calm cats under about 17 lb, on a hard floor, in a home with steady 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

Skip it if: your cat is very large, pees high, or startles easily, or you want weeks of hands-off use.

How did we research this review?

We didn't use the PuraMax 2 at home. Our verdict comes from owner reviews and outside research, and we explain our process on our How We Research page.

The Amazon listing showed 791 written reviews, sorted into 560 positive and 231 critical. We read 110 of them closely: 50 positive and 60 critical. We leaned toward critical reviews on purpose, because that's where problems show up.

We separated long-term reviews (1 month or more) from first impressions. We also set aside reviews that were vague, off-product, or looked pre-written. Then we checked PETKIT's own specs and FAQ, independent reviews, and guidance from the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Cornell Feline Health Center.

What is the PETKIT PuraMax 2?

The PuraMax 2 is a self-cleaning litter box with a rotating drum. After your cat leaves, it waits a set time, then turns to sift clumps into a sealed waste bin with a bag. Sensors are meant to stop the drum if a cat comes near.

It connects to the PETKIT app, which logs each visit and identifies cats by weight. You can also run it from buttons on the unit.

One note on weight: PETKIT's US FAQ lists a 22 lb maximum, but European listings give 8 kg (about 17.6 lb). Owner reviews line up better with the lower number, which we cover below.

Why does the PuraMax 2 earn a qualified recommendation?

For many homes, it does the main job well. Across the positive reviews we read, owners describe skipping daily scooping, a quiet cycle, and cats that moved in within days.

It also costs far less than the Litter-Robot 4, which independent roundups generally rate as the better box overall. That gap makes the PuraMax 2 a reasonable first automatic box, as long as you go in knowing the upkeep it still needs.

What do owners love about the PuraMax 2?

  • Less scooping, less strain. About 30 of the 50 positive reviews say it ended daily scooping. Several mention it eased back pain.
  • Odor control, at first. About 20 owners say the room stays fresh. Many of these reviews cover the first few weeks of use.
  • Per-cat tracking. About 14 owners value the visit logs and weight tracking. One owner said the weights matched the vet's scale to the ounce.
  • Quiet cycles. About 10 owners say they barely hear it, even in a home office.
  • Quick adjustment. About 20 owners say their cats used it within a day or a few days.
  • Low entrance. Owners of senior and short-legged cats say the low step made it easy to get in.

What are the most common PuraMax 2 complaints?

  • Glitches and false errors. About 17 critical reviews describe "cat detected" or "bin full" errors with no cat or an empty bin. Some say auto-cleaning stopped and they had to restart the unit.
  • Smell that builds over time. About 16 critical reviews say odor crept back, often after 1 to 3 months.
  • A litter pad that soaks up or leaks urine. About 14 reviews describe urine soaking into the fabric pad or reaching the base. A few describe claws tearing the pad.
  • Waste smearing inside the drum. About 12 owners say soft stool or wet litter smears the walls or top during a cycle.
  • A small waste bin for multi-cat homes. About 12 owners with 2 or more cats empty it every 2 to 10 days, not 15.
  • Frustrating customer service. About 12 owners describe slow replies, repeated requests for videos, or return fees. One owner said support replaced a faulty pad quickly.

Other complaints were less common but worth knowing. About 7 owners say a cat refused it or was scared by the motion. About 6 had trouble connecting to Wi-Fi.

Does the PuraMax 2 really control odor?

For most owners, yes, at first. The pattern changes in long-term reviews. Several owners who started at 5 stars say odor crept in after 1 to 3 months.

The most common explanation owners give is the fabric litter pad under the litter. They say urine soaks in, and wiping doesn't fully clear the smell. That's the leading explanation in the reviews, though we can't confirm it for every unit.

A few habits help, according to owners. They replace the pad every few months, deep clean the drum about monthly, and empty the bin before it's full. PETKIT now sells an updated Cat Litter Pad Max 3.0 that it lists as compatible with the PuraMax 2.

The waste bin is a second source of smell. Clumps stay damp in the sealed bin, so it can smell strong when you open it. Two owners reported flies or maggots in warm weather, so empty it more often in summer.

Will my cat fit, and will my cat use it?

Size

Results are mixed for big cats. Owners of 16 to 17 lb cats say their cats fit comfortably. Two owners of 20 lb cats say it was too small, and one said that led to peeing outside the box.

The AAFP recommends a litter box about 1.5 times your cat's length, from nose to the base of the tail. Measure your cat and compare it to the 18.9 in drum before you buy.

Cats that pee high or near the edge

This is where leaks show up most. Owners whose cats stand tall or pee against the wall report urine reaching the base. Some sealed gaps with waterproof tape or added an entry ledge. If your cat already pees over the edge of a regular box, this one is a gamble.

Nervous cats

Most cats adjusted within days. Still, about 7 owners say a cat avoided it, and a few watched the drum turn and never went back. Skittish cats are the group most likely to reject it.

How do owners avoid the most common problems?

Many complaints trace back to setup. These are the fixes owners mention most often.

  • Pick the right sifter first. The box comes with 2 sifters. Owners who used the wrong one for their litter wasted litter or got poor sifting, so check the manual or app before the first cycle.
  • Fill to the line, not past it. Overfilling makes litter spill during cycles. The fill line is hard to read in maintenance mode, so some owners fill it upright instead.
  • Give clumps time to set. Owners suggest a delay of 20 to 30 minutes before cleaning. PETKIT also offers a waste covering mode to reduce smearing.
  • Use a hard, level floor. PETKIT says this is needed for accurate weights. One owner on carpet found it stopped starting cycles until she put a board underneath.
  • Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The app doesn't work on 5 GHz. One owner had to turn off the 5 GHz band to pair it.
  • Start with a clean bag before a deep clean. One owner warns the empty-litter cycle keeps going even if the bin overflows.
  • Introduce it slowly. Run cleanings by hand at first, keep the old box nearby, and mix in a cup of used litter. Owners say this helped wary cats.
  • Add an entry ledge or fence for kickers. Several owners say PETKIT's clip-on ledge cut down on litter on the floor.

Should you still keep a regular litter box?

Yes. The AAFP advises 1 litter box per cat, plus 1 extra, in different spots around your home. An automatic box counts as one of them, not all of them.

A second, simple box is also a backup if the PuraMax 2 jams, loses power, or scares your cat. Many owners in our sample kept one, especially during the first week.

⚠️ Safety: watch for urinary trouble

A self-cleaning box removes the clumps you'd normally see, so changes in your cat's urine are easier to miss. A urinary blockage, most common in male cats, is a medical emergency, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center.

Call your vet or an emergency clinic right away if your cat:

  • Makes frequent trips to the box but passes little or no urine
  • Strains, cries, or seems distressed in the box
  • Pees outside the box suddenly

The app's visit log can help you spot a change, but it can't diagnose anything. Also, PETKIT doesn't recommend the box for cats under 3.3 lb. For kittens, use Kitten Protection Mode, which turns off automatic cleaning.

What are the flaws that aren't dealbreakers?

  • No litter mat included. One owner said a regular mat didn't fit the shape, and PETKIT's own mat costs extra.
  • The app pushes products. Owners find it useful, but some dislike the shopping prompts.
  • Weights can mix up similar cats. About 5 owners say it confused cats of similar size or logged the wrong weight.
  • It's bulky. Owners call it bigger than expected, so measure your space first.
  • Litter waste at the start. A few owners lost litter while learning the right fill level and sifter.

What should you look for in any automatic litter box?

  • Drum size for your biggest cat. Aim for at least 1.5 times your cat's body length, nose to tail base.
  • A low entrance for seniors. Older cats with stiff joints do better with a small step in.
  • Safety stops you can trust. Look for sensors that stop the drum when a cat approaches, plus a kitten mode.
  • Easy deep cleaning. Ask how the drum comes apart and whether the liner can be replaced.
  • Parts and support. Check that replacement pads, sifters, and bags are easy to buy.
  • Litter it accepts. Some boxes need special litter. The PuraMax 2 takes most clumping litters.

Litter-Robot 4: the upgrade

Independent roundups regularly name the Litter-Robot 4 the best automatic box overall and the PuraMax 2 the better value. Long-term owners point to its durability record. Several PuraMax 2 reviewers who switched said the same. It costs much more, so it makes the most sense if you'll rely on it every day for years.

PETKIT Purobot Max 3: the newer model

PETKIT launched the Purobot Max 3 on August 5, 2026. Early coverage notes a larger entrance, a side-mounted waste bin, and a redesigned leak guard. It's too new for the long-term owner reviews we rely on, so we're not ready to recommend it yet.

A large regular litter box: the budget route

If your cat is very large, nervous, or prone to accidents, a big open box may serve them better. The AAFP notes that bigger is better and that many commercial boxes are too small. You'll scoop daily, but nothing jams.

Who should buy the PETKIT PuraMax 2?

✓ Consider it if

  • You have 1 or 2 calm cats under about 17 lb
  • You can place it on a hard, level floor
  • You have reliable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
  • You want per-cat visit and weight tracking
  • You're fine with a monthly deep clean

✗ Skip it if

  • Your cat is over about 18 lb or pees high
  • Your cat startles at noise or motion
  • You want weeks of hands-off use
  • You have 3 or more cats and little time to empty the bin
  • You don't have space to rinse the drum

PETKIT PuraMax 2 FAQ

Is the PETKIT PuraMax 2 worth it?

For 1 or 2 easygoing, average-size cats, owners generally say yes. It ends daily scooping and costs less than the Litter-Robot 4. It isn't hands-off, though. Expect to empty the bin often, deep clean monthly, and replace the litter pad over time.

How often do you need to empty the PuraMax 2?

PETKIT says the 7 L bin holds up to 15 days of waste for 1 cat. Owners with 2 or more cats report emptying it every 2 to 10 days. Empty it sooner in hot weather to limit smell and flies.

Does the PuraMax 2 work without Wi-Fi?

Partly. You can run cleanings and maintenance from the buttons on the unit, and one owner used it this way happily. Others without a stable connection found the setup limited and the buttons fussy. For the full features, plan on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

What litter works best in the PuraMax 2?

Clumping clay, tofu, or mixed litter works best. Owners report fewer problems with unscented, low-dust, fast-clumping litter. One owner who used crystal litter had no issues, but it isn't what PETKIT designed it for.

Can kittens use the PuraMax 2?

PETKIT doesn't recommend it for cats under 3.3 lb. If you have a kitten, turn on Kitten Protection Mode, which stops automatic cleaning, and run cycles by hand when the kitten is out of the room.
