Can I Leave My Cat Alone? Trip Planner
Going away for a day, a weekend, or longer? Answer six quick questions to find out whether your cat can stay home alone, what to set up before you go, and when you need a sitter.
How long can you leave a cat alone?
Healthy adult cats can generally be left alone for 8 to 12 hours. For anything longer than 24 hours, arrange for someone to check on your cat at least once a day. Kittens and cats with health needs need care much more often.
| Cat | Time alone |
|---|---|
| Bottle-fed kittens | No more than 2 to 3 hours, because they need frequent feeding |
| Weaned kittens (under 6 months) | No more than 4 hours |
| Kittens 6 to 12 months | About 6 to 8 hours |
| Healthy adult cats | 8 to 12 hours, including most overnight absences |
| Up to 24 hours | Some adult cats manage it occasionally, but a check-in is strongly recommended |
| More than 24 hours | Arrange a sitter or trusted person to visit at least once a day |
| A week | Never without daily care, even with plenty of food and water |

Why cats shouldn't be left alone for days
Cats are more independent than dogs, but they're also social animals that bond with their people. Food and water alone don't cover the risks of a long absence:
- Running out of food or water, or a bowl getting tipped over
- Litter box problems, which can lead to accidents around the house
- Getting into danger: toxic plants, chemicals, cords, or getting shut in a closet
- Illness going unnoticed until it's more serious
- Fights between cats that don't always get along
- Boredom, loneliness, and stress from too much time alone
Common questions
Can I leave my cat alone overnight?
Most healthy adult cats are fine alone overnight for up to 8 to 12 hours, as long as they have fresh water, food, and a clean litter box.
Can I leave my cat alone for a weekend?
Not completely alone. A weekend is more than 24 hours, so arrange for someone to visit at least once a day to refresh food and water, scoop the litter box, and make sure your cat is well.
Is an automatic feeder enough for a few days?
No. An automatic feeder and water fountain help, but they can't scoop a litter box, spot illness, or fix a jammed feeder. Use them alongside daily visits, not instead of them, and test any new feeder for a few days before you leave.
Do cats get lonely when you're away?
Yes, many do. Despite their independent reputation, cats form strong bonds with their people. Don't be surprised if your cat is a little aloof, or extra clingy, for a day or two after you get back.
Is a sitter or boarding better for cats?
Many cats are more relaxed staying in their own home, where routines and smells are familiar. Boarding at a cat-only facility or your vet's clinic can suit cats that need medication or close health monitoring. Ask your vet what fits your cat.
